This project modernizes and “straightens out” the global favorite game “Snake and Ladders”.

Snakes and ladders originated from ancient India, teaching about karma and luck. In life, there are snakes that brings you down, while sometimes you hit a ladder and you reach your goals faster. I chose to stilate guardian sculptures in Balinese homes called Kekarangan as the player pieces. They are believed to ward off evil spirits and invite good ones to your home. I thought it was fitting for the Hindu inspired game.

I liked snakes and ladders as I was a kid. I first played it at elementary school and it was fun. But I've never encountered a nice looking board and design of one (despite how fun it was!). The snakes and ladders, colors were just all over the place like a big tangled mess. So I took the opportunity during my exchange program to straighten up that tangled mess. Marrying the old with modern aesthetics was a thing for me back then.
