Reintegration of Faith and Academia

Christianity is counter-cultural, proposing a way of life that runs against what most consider "normal." It is a culture rooted in the teachings and principles of God, a revelation of truth offered to anyone willing to believe. In a world where society has long declared that God is dead, academia has broadly abandoned the notion of God as sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things.

The Fellowship of Indonesian Reformed Evangelical Students (FIRES) offers an alternative foundation for the sciences — one rooted in deep devotional spirituality, rational inquiry, and total surrender to God. FIRES aims to reconnect faith and academia through a holistic view of reality, where science, art, literature, and culture are understood as interconnected and find their coherence in their Creator.

This branding project reflects that vision with a refreshed, contextualized, and youthful engagement with a Christian heritage spanning 2,000 years. In a modern, pragmatic world where tradition is often dismissed as backward, the brand seeks to reignite that heritage by transforming it from monument into movement, and countering perceptions of regression or institutional rigidity.

Logo Design

Reflecting the Reformed Evangelical movement, the logo signals a balance between theological rigor and compassionate evangelical outreach. Inspired by blackletter forms of the Gutenberg printing press, it references a moment when faith and knowledge were not separate, but deeply intertwined and made accessible to all.

The upright structure signals firmness, while the calligraphic swash, notably the ‘R’ hugging the ‘e’ and ‘s’, signals the warm outward movement.

Color

Starting out in 2005, FIRES did not have much funds to go by, and that included printing. FIRES could only afford to print in black and white to move quickly and spread posters/brochures for the fellowship or events. What started as a means of transmission became an iconic identity marker, signalling clarity, urgency, and a commitment to substance over spectacle, where the focus was not on superficiality, but on the weight and reach of the ideas being shared.

Typeface

Alright Sans is inspired by both grotesque and humanist typefaces, allowing FIRES to have a modern but warm look. The bible verse and other quote formats use Baskerville, a font with a nice balance of old-type serif and clean modern. The titles mainly use the Black weight. However the font used for titles can be situational according to its content, retaining room for exploration and experimentation as students do in academia.

Image Treatment

Aiming to rekindle the vitality of tradition and reconnect faith with everyday life, FIRES seeks to reintroduce Christian thought and heritage into contemporary conversation. For a modern and youthful twist, paintings, etchings, also modern memes or illustration styles are combined to create a conversation between the past and the present. The result is a balanced approach that honors the integrity of tradition while presenting it in a way that feels relevant and accessible today.

Poster Design

Besides their weekly fellowship service, FIRES provides eagerly learning Christians in Indonesia with many types of events during weekends, or holidays. Posters are mainly designed to be digitally shared on Instagram or chatting apps.

Instagram has been FIRES’ main way of interacting with people digitally. Every week FIRES posts 2-4 educational content with themes surrounding 5 pillars: ethics, ministry, doctrine, epistemology, and culture.
